Here is some trivia about Chemeketa to get you started and to give you a flavor of the College. For additional Facts and Figures about Chemeketa, click here.

  • "Chemeketa" is a Native American word meaning "gathering place." In 2006, the word was officially given to the College by the Grand Ronde Confederated Tribes.
  • "Chemeketa Time" is about 10 minutes extra to allow everyone to gather. I believe this stems from the difficulty in synchronize all of the campus clocks to a set time. For example, you may leave your office at 9:50 to meet someone across campus and their clocks will read 9:45 or 10:00. Therefore, upon arrival, you may be ahead of schedule, on time or already late.
  • "The Quad" - formerly between Buildings 2, 22 and 3, the Quad was moved with the addition of Buildings 9 and 1 to the landscaped area in the middle of Buildings 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 9.
  • Building numbers and College directions. The College is set on the landscape at an angle so that giving directions using north, east, west and south is difficult. It is also difficult to direct people to buildings. There are no names and the numbers were added as buildings were added - in somewhat of a concentric circle. Therefore, Building 2 is next to 19, which is next to 22, across from 33. It is best to just walk around a lot and get to know the campus.
  • South Campus is the area South of the campus that houses many old and new buildings owned by the College. These buildings have housed a varied number of programs and community partners. The Department of Human Services and Marion Polk Schools Credit Union are among the partners.
